Choosing A Spray Deck

A spray deck is an important part of your equipment. It is the barrier between you, your kayak and the water.

It's designed to fit around the cockpit of the kayak and seal it so that water cannot enter the kayak.

Spray decks are available in a variety of materials including waterproof fabric and neoprene.

Each spray deck has some key features:

Waist Seal - This is the part that goes around your waist. It should have adjustment or be the right size for your waist (usually in small, medium, large and extra-large) and be tight enough to minimise water ingress and stop it from falling down.

Cockpit Seal - The seal around the cockpit is usually very tight and the spray deck can only be fitted when sitting in the kayak. Sometimes it has adjustment and sometimes it is made specifically for the size of cockpit you have.

Handle - This is the most important feature. The handle is at the front of the spray deck. In the event of a capsize, the handle is used to remove the spray deck. The handle should be strong and large enough to make it easy to grab in an emergency.

Neoprene spray decks fit the tightest and are usually used on white water kayaks. They give a small amount of stretch which allows waves to crash on the deck without it coming off.

Waterproof material spray decks are best for beginners as they are easier to put on and to remove in an emergency.

Fitting a spray deck can be tricky. Start by sitting in the kayak and putting the rear of the spray deck over the lip at the back of the cockpit. Gradually work forward and push the spray deck under the lip until you reach the front of the cockpit. At this point, slowly pull the last part of the spray deck over the front of the cockpit. Check all around the cockpit rim to ensure the spray deck is fully fitted and watertight.

Important - Ensure that the handle is visible and available to use.

For the first few tries, it helps to have a second person to help put the spray deck on. Once you are used to it, it is easy and you will be able to do it yourself.

A spray deck has the added advantage of providing some extra warmth against the elements. Sealing the cockpit keeps the air inside stable and allows a small amount of heat to build up. Ideal on cold days.

To paddle with a spray deck on, you must be confident to remove it and exit the kayak during a capsize. You must practice so you know how to do it. The handle on the spray deck is used to pull the spray deck off the rim of the cockpit. Once loose, you can use your hands and arms to push your body out of the kayak.

Which is the best spray deck for you?

Well, there are many options available to choose from. Different colours, materials and types.

If possible, it is best to try them on your kayak when you are sitting in it. Most shops will at least let you try them around your waist to check the size.

You can measure the cockpit size and then the spray deck to ensure the spray deck will fit. Some shops/websites will show the full dimensions (length of spray deck, width of spray deck, waist size and height of waist tube) so you can check these against your kayak cockpit.

All spray decks are waterproof and a basic waterproof fabric one is ideal for beginners. White water kayaks are best coupled with a neoprene spray deck. These provide a better fit around the cockpit and are less likely to come off when forced with white water.

You must be confident to use a neoprene spray deck. They can be tricky to put on and a little more difficult to remove in an emergency.

Again, try using different types of spray deck before you commit to buying one. You can check with other paddlers too – they will be quick to tell you about their preferred spray deck.
