Paddling jacket vs rain jacket - which is best?

What is the difference between a paddling jacket vs. rain jacket?

Which one is best to wear when undertaking paddling activities?

Let's find out...

A paddling jacket is a waterproof jacket specifically made for paddling. It has features that make it more suitable and better equipped for kayaking, canoeing or stand up paddle boarding (SUP).

A rain jacket is a waterproof jacket used to keep the rain off you when you are out in inclement weather.

It has general features that make it suitable to be worn in a wide variety of situations. It may be made from similar materials to a paddling jacket albeit perhaps to a lower quality.

For paddlesports, a jacket is needed to keep you dry. This maximises your chances of staying warm and makes your paddling experience far more enjoyable.

Key features of a paddling jacket:

  • Sized and styled for paddling kayaks, canoes or stand up paddle boards (SUP)
  • Finishes at waist with elastic or neoprene seal
  • Neoprene or latex collars and cuffs to limit water ingress
  • Tighter fitting while allowing plenty of movement
  • Over the head fitting
  • Simple colour range - often bright colours
  • Can be made from breathable material to minimise condensation during exercise
  • Minimal or no pockets
  • Rarely has a hood
  • Sometimes has reflective strips so you can be seen
  • Made from heavy duty waterproof material designed to withstand abrasions
  • Paddling jackets are available from specialist paddlesport shops and online specialist vendors

Key features of a rain jacket:

  • Sized and styled to be used in a wide variety of situations
  • Multiple pockets for storage
  • Elastic cuffs
  • Drawstring collar and hood
  • Zip on the front for easy putting on
  • Generous fitting
  • Can be longer fitting down to the knees
  • Wide colour range
  • Sometimes has reflective strips so you can be seen
  • Often has a hood
  • Made from lightweight material for easier carrying
  • Some can be folded into the hood for carrying
  • Rain jackets are available in many high street shops and online retailers

Prices for each jacket do vary with rain jackets averaging a lower price than paddling jackets (check pricing online for up to date figures). This represents the more specialist features of a paddling jacket.

Rain jackets are generously sized (baggy) whereas paddling jackets are cut with a tighter fit while allowing unrestricted arm and torso movement. The neoprene or latex collar and cuffs on a paddling jacket are designed to be tight against the skin to stop water coming in. They can seem uncomfortable at first.

The thickness of the waterproof material on a paddling jacket makes it durable and can withstand mild abrasions. On paddling jackets, key areas like the elbows might be reinforced to reduce wear.

Some rain and paddling jackets are made from a breathable material. This allows moisture on the inside of the jacket (generated from exercise) to move through the material to the outside and be wicked away. Water from the outside cannot pass through the material to the inside though.

A normal rain jacket could be suitable for using when undertaking paddlesports like kayaking, canoeing and stand up paddle board but a purpose made paddling jacket would be much better.

It has features that are focused on keeping you warm and dry and has options priced at most price points to suit your budget.

Have fun and happy, warm, paddling.
